What You Need to Drive Abroad by Car
Travelling abroad by car gives you more freedom when planning your route, but it is important to check both the driver’s documents and the vehicle documents before departure. Requirements may vary by country, so it is best to prepare in advance.
What You Need to Travel Abroad in Your Own Car
A basic set of documents for the driver usually includes:
-
a valid passport and any other documents required for entry into the destination country;
-
a valid driving licence that meets international requirements;
-
the vehicle registration certificate;
-
compliant licence plates;
-
the national identification sign of Ukraine;
-
an international motor insurance policy valid in the countries on your route.
Some countries may also require an International Driving Permit. Before travelling, check the validity of all documents as well as the requirements of both the destination country and any transit countries.
Do You Need a Vehicle Inspection to Drive Abroad?
There is no single rule that applies to every country. In Ukraine, privately owned passenger vehicles are not always subject to mandatory technical inspection unless they fall under specific categories defined by law. However, another country may require proof that the vehicle is in proper technical condition.
For this reason, the question of whether you need a vehicle inspection to drive abroad should always be checked according to the rules of the country you are entering or travelling through.

Can You Drive Abroad in Someone Else’s Car?
Yes, but simply having permission to use the vehicle in Ukraine may not be enough. For example, being listed as an authorised user or having access to the vehicle through the Diia app does not automatically give you the right to cross the state border in that car.
The vehicle owner can contact a service centre of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and obtain a vehicle registration certificate issued in the driver’s name for the period of the trip abroad. After returning, this document must be returned within the required period.
Do You Need a Power of Attorney to Drive a Car Abroad?
The question of whether you need a power of attorney to drive a car abroad is especially relevant when the vehicle is registered to a relative, friend or another person.
A power of attorney may confirm the right to use or manage the vehicle, but the rules of the destination country should also be taken into account. To reduce the risk of additional questions at the border, the owner may arrange a temporary vehicle registration certificate in the driver’s name.
Where Is the Best Place to Cross the Polish Border by Car?
There is no single “best” border crossing because traffic levels vary depending on the day, time, season and current border situation. Common road crossings include Krakivets–Korczowa, Shehyni–Medyka, Rava-Ruska–Hrebenne, Uhryniv–Dołhobyczów and others.
When deciding where it is best to cross the Polish border by car, consider not only the distance but also the current congestion at each checkpoint shortly before departure.
What to Check Before Your Trip
Before leaving, review the entry requirements for every country on your route and check your insurance, driving licence, vehicle registration certificate and the technical condition of the car. If the vehicle belongs to someone else, do not leave the required authorisation documents until the last moment.
Proper preparation can help you avoid unnecessary delays at the border and make your international road trip much smoother.
